UAE’s Dr. Sultan Al Jaber Takes Helm of COP28, Setting Ambitious Climate Agenda

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber is set to be formally appointed as the President of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) today, marking a significant moment in the global climate change dialogue. The COP Presidency will transition from Egypt’s Sameh Shoukry to Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, as the United Arab Emirates gears up for two weeks of intensive climate negotiations.

The official proceedings will begin with an opening ceremony, where Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, along with other dignitaries, will address the gathering. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is also scheduled to deliver remarks at the COP28 opening press conference.

COP28, under Dr. Al Jaber’s leadership, is dedicated to a clear goal: driving ambitious, feasible, and substantial action to ensure that the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius remains attainable, while ensuring no one is left behind. This year’s conference aims to set high ambitions and establish new methods for achieving these climate goals.
