Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango Strengthens Climate Action Collaboration with Global Center on Adaptation

Baku, Azerbaijan — Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, met with Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, the CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), for strategic discussions aimed at bolstering Tanzania’s resilience against climate change. This high-level meeting took place on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP-29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, currently being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The discussions between Dr. Mpango and Prof. Verkooijen focused on expanding Tanzania’s cooperation with GCA to implement effective climate adaptation measures. With Tanzania among the nations vulnerable to climate impacts, the strengthened partnership aims to advance initiatives addressing environmental resilience and socio-economic stability in the face of climate change.

Key Tanzanian government officials joined the Vice President in these talks, highlighting the country’s commitment to global climate action. The delegation included Finance Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment) Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Cosato Chumi, and Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office, Engineer Cyprian Luhemeja. Also in attendance were Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Hussein Katanga, and the President’s Advisor on Climate Change, Dr. Richard Muyungi.

Dr. Mpango and Prof. Verkooijen’s dialogue underscored the need for immediate and impactful adaptation strategies, as well as access to funding and technological resources to tackle climate challenges effectively. The meeting marks a significant step toward fortifying Tanzania’s climate resilience and advancing collaborative efforts in global climate adaptation.
