Kenya Breaks Ground for World’s First Green Garment Factory Constructed from Recycled Containers
Athi River, Kenya – May 20, 2024 – A groundbreaking ceremony in Athi River EPZ marked the start of construction for the world’s first sustainable garment factory built from upcycled containers. This innovative $1.83 million project is financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with a $530,000 investment and a $1.3 million loan from Trade Catalyst Africa (TCA).
Spanning 5,000 square meters, the facility is expected to revolutionize sustainable industrial practices. It will utilize solar energy and rainwater harvesting systems. Upon completion in December 2024, the factory is projected to save approximately 18 tons of CO2 annually and conserve around 1,000 cubic meters of water each year.
This venture is a collaborative effort involving TCA and Modular Real Estate EPZ Limited (MODULAR), a subsidiary of Container Technology Limited (CONTECH). “This investment is not just about economic growth but setting a global standard for sustainable industrial practices,” explained Duncan Onyango, CEO of Trade Catalyst Africa. “It represents our commitment to environmental stewardship and positions Kenya and Africa as pioneers in sustainable manufacturing.”
Naeem Pasta, CEO of Modular Real Estate EPZ, highlighted the project’s innovative aspects, stating, “This factory is a testament to how innovative thinking and environmental responsibility can lead to significant economic and ecological benefits. We’re proud to be at the forefront of this pioneering endeavor.”
Significance for Kenya: The green garment and textile center aligns with Kenya’s vision of transforming into a newly industrializing, middle-income country. By integrating sustainable practices into its industrial sectors, Kenya enhances its global competitiveness and sets a precedent for green manufacturing worldwide. The garment industry, a significant employer of women in Kenya, will see enhanced job creation and training opportunities, empowering local communities and reducing poverty.
