CS Dr. Andrew Karanja Inaugurates KeFAAS Symposium, Stresses Digital Extension Services for Agricultural Growth
Nairobi, October 17, 2024 – Cabinet Secretary Dr. Andrew Karanja emphasized the need for innovative extension services during the opening of the 2nd National Agricultural Extension Symposium, organized by the Kenya Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (KeFAAS). Themed “Delivering Pluralistic Extension to the Last Mile for an Improved Agri-Food System,” the event aimed to address key challenges and opportunities for transforming Kenya’s agricultural landscape.
Dr. Karanja highlighted that effective extension services are crucial to advancing Kenya’s agricultural sector. He stressed the importance of modernizing these services, especially in rural areas, by leveraging digital tools and engaging digitally-skilled youth. “Our strategy is to empower extension workers with the latest digital tools to bridge the knowledge gap and promote innovative agricultural practices,” he stated.
The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with county governments, the private sector, and development partners to improve extension service delivery. This will ensure that even the most remote farmers have access to vital information and training to boost productivity and sustainability. This effort aligns with Kenya’s vision to shift from subsistence farming to a commercially viable and technology-driven agricultural sector.
The symposium also focused on how pluralistic extension models—combining public, private, and civil society efforts—can ensure broader reach and greater effectiveness in Kenya’s diverse agricultural landscape.
As the symposium continues, stakeholders are expected to outline new initiatives that will contribute to a more resilient and productive agri-food system.
