AGRA Malawi Looks to Tanzania’s Corridor Model in Learning Exchange Visit

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — July 30, 2025

In a notable example of South-South cooperation in Africa’s agricultural sector, the Agricultural Growth Corridors of Tanzania (AGCOT) this week hosted a high-level delegation from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) Malawi, seeking to deepen cross-border learning and accelerate the transformation of food systems in southern Africa.

The strategic visit, was jointly facilitated by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania and AGRA Malawi. It marks an important milestone in Malawi’s exploration of the SAGCOT model, Tanzania’s flagship approach to agricultural development that integrates public-private partnerships, climate-smart farming practices, and inclusive growth across designated geographic corridors.

The visiting delegation from AGRA Malawi included Robert Maziko, Valentine Miheso, AGRA Malawi’s Country Program Lead, and Chipo . Over the course of their visit, the team engaged directly with AGCOT leadership, including Geoffrey Kirenga, Chief Executive Officer of AGCOT, Abdallah Msambachi, TSSI Manager, and Albin Massawe, M&E Manager.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Kirenga noted that the SAGCOT model, now institutionalised under AGCOT, was built to stimulate inclusive and climate-resilient agricultural growth through coordinated investments, stakeholder alignment, and long-term sustainability.

“This learning visit reinforces the importance of strategic partnerships and South-South collaboration as we collectively shape the future of African agriculture,” Kirenga said.

The AGRA Malawi delegation visited AGCOT sites in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, gaining firsthand insight into how Tanzania has effectively structured its agricultural transformation agenda. Emphasis was placed on lessons in mobilizing investment, fostering innovation, and ensuring smallholder inclusion across the agricultural value chain.

Tanzania’s corridor-based strategy—pioneered through the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT)—has gained international recognition for its integrated approach, combining policy support, infrastructure development, and private-sector engagement.

AGCOT officials expressed optimism that the knowledge exchange would foster deeper alignment between Tanzania and Malawi, and unlock collaborative opportunities for future corridor initiatives across the continent.

.The visit concludes as Africa’s agricultural sector grapples with mounting pressures from climate change, food insecurity, and shifting market dynamics. Partnerships like these, stakeholders say, will be key to achieving the continent’s food security goals under the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
