Mtwara Port Expects Nine Vessels for Cashew Export

Mtwara, Tanzania – Mtwara Port is gearing up to receive nine vessels carrying over 2,758 empty containers for the purpose of loading raw cashew nuts destined for international markets.

Duncan Kazibure, the Acting Manager of Mtwara Port, made this announcement on November 27, 2023, during a meeting discussing the trends in cashew sales in the country.

Kazibure revealed that these containers have the capacity to hold more than 105,000 metric tons of raw cashew nuts. The containers are being provided by shipping companies such as CMA, CGM, PIL, and MSC.

He further stated that the port has already received a total of 2,650 empty containers from various companies, including containers capable of packing 100,954.4 metric tons of cashew nuts.

“There is an estimated need for around 3,779 empty containers capable of loading over 143,968 metric tons to complete the entire process of transporting more than 350,000 metric tons by the end of the season,” Kazibure said.

Kazibure emphasized that the port is committed to collaborating with shipping companies to ensure an increase in vessel availability and empty containers, thus achieving the goal of efficiently exporting cashew nuts through the port.

The influx of empty containers and the preparations at Mtwara Port signify a positive outlook for the cashew industry, with hopes of boosting exports and contributing significantly to Tanzania’s economy.
