Rwanda’s Agricultural Production Soars by 316,000 Tons in Q1 2024
Kigali, Rwanda – The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) recently announced a substantial increase in agricultural production for the first quarter of 2024. Crop yield surged by 316,000 tons compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 4,379,725 tons. This achievement is a welcome development ahead of Umuganura, the cultural festival celebrating the harvest.
Key Factors Driving Growth
The remarkable growth in agricultural production is attributed to implementing an integrated agricultural policy, a concerted effort to address food insecurity concerns, according to The Director General of RAB, Telesphore Ndabamenye. Noted key strategies that contributed to this success include:
- Cultivating unused land: Large tracts previously reserved for cattle grazing were utilized for crop cultivation, particularly in districts like Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, and Kirehe.
- Enhanced irrigation and erosion control: Irrigation systems were expanded, particularly in hilly areas, and erosion control measures like terraces and ditches were implemented to safeguard crops.
- Increased fertilizer and improved seed adoption: The use of fertilizers and improved seeds was promoted, leading to higher yields for crops like maize and rice.
Impact on Food Security and Farmers
The increase in agricultural production has bolstered food security and reduced food prices in the market. Farmers have reaped the benefits of improved yields and profits, with cooperatives reporting substantial increases in production. Farmers have highlighted the success of irrigation and erosion control initiatives, as well as the adoption of improved seeds and fertilizers, as key factors in their achievements.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming Umuganura festival will allow Rwandans to celebrate the agricultural achievements of the past season and plan for future growth. The government aims to continue supporting agricultural development through measures such as promoting irrigation, fertilizer use, and improved seeds, as well as encouraging the cultivation of unused land.
Data Highlights:
- Total crop yield increase: 316,000 tons
- Percentage increase in maize production: 30%
- Percentage increase in rice production: 8%
- Percentage of population using irrigation: 7.5%
- Percentage of farmers adopting anti-erosion ditches: 90.6%
This significant boost in agricultural production marks a crucial step towards achieving food security and sustainable development goals in Rwanda. With continued support for farmers and innovative agricultural practices, the country is poised for further growth in the agricultural sector.
